So true about the opportunities coming when you least expect them and your not ready for them. Its spontaneous and one has to make an immediate decision. Have to be ready at all times.

Community involvement is a possible secret. If the industry gets a feel for what the current mainstream of the society is struggling with, the subject matter of the film produced will touch people directly and create a buzz, and generate revenue. That will attract investment.

For most deals, it seems that the greatest fear is ending up with no deal. My late father, whose financial acumen may not have been the best, left me with a great quote (which I believe he created): "The most money I ever made were from deals that I never did."

Steven,

You're right. You absolutely need to know what the other party's goals are. There's nothing wrong with asking either. On this, many are quite forthcoming assuming they know the answer for themselves.

A quantum leap means going from one state of existence to another without transitioning between them. That's a hard trick to do in any business. And yet, it is necessary. But it requires overcoming one of the most powerful business force ever: inertia.

I think you're exactly right, Peter. With all due respect to Steven's comment, if anyone in our business is looking only at their short term interests, they are going to have a short career. This is excellent advice and perspective.

Well, Peter I still think it's hard to find common ground when one side is getting so superbly ripped off, re the SAG issue. Example set aside, I love the ideas you are discussing here in this post. I would really like to hear you go a bit further. This is not my usual "area".

I think it is an Achilles Heel for most creative folk. Very weak in this area. I would like if you write a post on this for actors. The new media is also the un-represented media...agents aren't negotiating there for actors as they always were in traditional media. Actors, and other creatives, usually need to learn 2 things: how to stick up for themselves, and paradoxically, how to be confident enough to be able to trust, and participate, in a real negotiation.

You are assuming that Pumpkin Guy has a long term interest. I remember seeing a large sign at a local pumpkin patch/Christmas tree lot asking for investors in late September. This was visible from the freeway. If you feel that you business may be a one time shot, then why not gouge? Not everyone is looking at the long road. Many are looking at the short term gain and that's it. So, to put this comment in the proper context, when negotiating on the down side of supply and demand, it's critical to know if the other party has long term interests or not.

Unfortunately, Peter, I don't think much will change by AFM -- at least not for the better. If anything, it appears that the purse strings have been drawn even tighter since Toronto. However, AFM is certainly a different type of market than Toronto. It is a lot of smaller films looking for smaller deals, and there should be some activity at that end of the market. They have to put something on the screens and inexpensive content is the name of the game right now.

I actually think the current environment is putting efficient filmmaking and good storytelling at a premium. No one (except Michael Bay) gets to throw $150 million of special effects at the screen to see what happens. That means they actually might have to make an engaging film that relies on a good script, good acting and a solid marketing campaign. None of that bothers me.

Pam,

Many thanks for your correction. My bad is all the more severe since I googled the term for the correct spelling before publishing my post. Apparently, there's a number of us out there misspelling German expressions. Just goes to show you can't rely on the Internet for everything!

You might also consider looking at "Homestar Runner" as well since they are quite popular. They've got t-shirts and DVD versions of their shorts for sale on a website.

Frankly I don't see a future where the major players (studios, networks, etc) are completely absent or irrelevant. It will, however, become more common for them to recruit successful interest based entertainers.
-Jonathan

Not your more fully realized comment. If memory serves..Your reference is not posted of your picture on cover of Lawyrer...?The one laptop per child was the brainchild of ?...If you sent $200....A child would receive a free laptop in an undeveloped world and you would receive the second laptop for yourself. The idea of such a cheap laptop was 'stolen' by one of the big companies to sell to the public...which they did. No charitible contrubution to anyone...ALL FOR ME...sound familiar. I don't know how it was finally settled and no time to do the research but laptops were sold to governments for very little money. My facts are not dead -on accurant but the gist is there. Would love to read YOUR take on the facts. These computers were small with limited memory and ran on batteries that could be recharged in the community.A fabulous idea especially for now. Its the leading edge. of tomorrow...needs more publicity.

One thing that might have been understated is the transition of the film short from a calling card for new talent to a new conduit for mainstream and established talent - due to the internet and the widespread popularity of the short on youtube, funny or die, and platforms like the ipod and mobile phones.

Oh, and your comment about short films: I wish that movie theatres would actually screen a different short every week before the feature presentation. I'm sure it would bring new customers, it would bring back repeats and it would help talent to be recognized. (Not only the obvious talent but all below the line talent as well) This would certainly help strengthen the economy and also help investors.

If anybody out there has a movie theatre, I would love to partner with you in this endeavor! Yeah! :-)

Interesting blog. I think that the film industry is going to become more creative and there will be more quality films due to private funding. There are many filmmakers who cannot leave the country to shoot oversees but they will find ways to create and be independent. We already saw a lot of inspiring and creative films that were created during the strike. I'm looking forward to more!

It's a strange thing, this whole "critically acclaimed" business. All too often, I find reviewers writing about the film they'd like to have seen rather than the movie in front of them. I, too, was underwhelmed by Dark Knight, and spectacularly disappointed by Wall*E - which I read was profound but turned out to be twee. There's no accounting for taste, which is why I feel that, however we dress it up as sensible decision making, any picture we make is still just another game of roulette.
